The MOT test is a comprehensive inspection of a vehicle’s safety and environmental systems. It was introduced by the UK government to make sure vehicles are safe for driving and meet emission standards. Typically required for cars that are over three years old, the test checks various components of the vehicle, including lights, brakes, tires, suspension, emissions, and overall structural integrity. The primary goal is to ensure that the vehicle is fit for the road and does not pose a risk to the driver, passengers, or other road users.
An MOT test does not include checks on the engine, gearbox, or clutch condition, which are typically covered under a separate vehicle service. Instead, the test focuses on components directly linked to road safety and legal requirements, such as brake functionality, tire tread depth, and exhaust emissions. Vehicles that pass the MOT are granted a certificate valid for one year, after which another test is required to keep the vehicle compliant with road safety regulations.
